Francis Pott talks about praising God He uses imagery idiomatic to European and American culture, which describes angelic beings as playing harps constantly and doing nothing but praising God . It compares humanity unfavorably as being unworthy sinful. Still, as unworthy as humanity is, humanity can claim the ear of God. This is through the fact that God designed our ears, hands and voices, and that our crafts, and music combine to give God pleasure. Even though our choicest melody is unworthy (especially when compared to celestial talent), it is still something we can freely and happily offer to God.

    Oddly enough, Francis Pott disliked the tune by Sullivan. His family was in the vinegar business. Vinegar was important back in those days and the Pott family was involved with producing it. And prospered.

    Arthur S. Sullivan is best known for writing light opera.

    He also composed symphonic pieces, ballet and hymn tunes, and was a church musician
